During the Babylonian Captivity (606 to 536 BCE), those Judahites who remained in the land of Israel reestablished the altar at Shechem to keep the Israelite worship system going when access to the Temple in Jerusalem was cut off. It became the main settlement of the Samaritans during the time of Christ for this reason.

After events of NT, in 72 CE, it was made a veteran colony named Neapolis. That name survives as Nablus, in the Occupied Territories.
